#WS15 Mussolini Mosaic

Original WWII captured tile mosaic of Benito Mussolini (29 July 1883 – 28 April 1945). Period made with small coloured tiles. Original period wooden frame with old newspapers behind a piece of glass on the reverse, with everything including the hanging wire showing lots of patina and age. The mosaic was sent to us on consignment from South Africa, the collector explains it was captured by Union of South Africa soldier serving with the British Empire forces in the North African campaign, possibly taken from an Italian headquarters. The Italian Army played a significant role as part of the German Afrikakorps and made up a large portion of the Axis combat power in North Africa during 1941 and 1942. Background; Benito Mussolini was an Italian dictator who founded and led the National Fascist Party (PNF). He was Prime Minister of Italy from the March on Rome in 1922, until his deposition in 1943, as well as Duce of Italian fascism from the establishment of the Italian Fasces of Combat in 1919, until his summary execution in 1945. As a dictator and founder of fascism, Mussolini inspired the international spread of fascist movements during the interwar period.
